STEP 1
Check what your ping time should be using this website: www.just-ping.com/index.php?vh=www.cnqreboot.info&c=&s=ping
Look for a location near to you. If your ping is massively more (more than double) what it should be, this guide can help.
For example, Tunngle players in Europe and Western Russia should have a ping of 100 or less (almost all should have a ping under 70). This means that all players in Europe and Western Russia should have ZERO lag. If you are playing with lag, something is going wrong.
STEP 2
Check your ping by starting cmd.exe
On windows 7, click the start icon and type "cmd" (with no quotation marks) in the box as shown in this picture
Type "ping cnqreboot.info" and press enter. This will tell you your ping time. We are going to use the example of Morgoth. Yesterday his ping to CNQ was around 160 - 240. Much, much too high for his location.
Then type "tracert cnqreboot.info". This will show you the route taken to access the CNQ servers. Here is Morgoth's tracert to CNQ yesterday:
Not good. This result shows that the problem is in Morgoth's network. Before he has even left his own private network (step 1) he already has a massive ping of 480 (for a tracert). This will be adding about 150 m/s to his ping in game. If you have a very large first step, like this, or you get an error saying the route can't be resolved, you likely have this problem.
STEP 3
Uninstall your router. (Morgoth also uninstalled all connection software from his ISP and took the time to generally clean his computer, uninstalling every progam that was not Windows, but to start with simply uninstalling the router should be enough)
STEP 4
Reinstall the router.
STEP 5
Test ping.
Here is Morgoth's new ping to CNQ after reinstalling his router
As you can see, he's really reduced his ping and now plays with massively improved lag!
